Mankind’s last organic footnote

We like to think technology drives progress. It doesn’t. People do. Adoption, not invention, decides the future. The last organic footnote in our evolutionary journey is not the birth of artificial super-intelligence, but the human choice to weave it into everyday life.

And at the centre of that choice sits marketing. We are the bridge – between developers who build capability and consumers who decide legitimacy. Which raises a question too big to dodge: are marketers up to the task?

Why begins at behaviour

Every technology curve hides a human curve. We don’t scale because machines get smarter. We scale because trust gets earned. When people feel seen, safe and served, adoption compounds. When they don’t, even the cleverest code stalls.

So let’s look at this moment from two vantage points: the developer and the consumer. One builds capability. The other confers legitimacy. And in the middle? The marketer – translating, framing, persuading, shaping.

From the developer’s vantage point: capability is not destiny

You can ship a model that dazzles on benchmarks and still fail in the market if you ignore the psychology of adoption. The questions that matter are simple and human:

  • Do people understand what it’s for?
  • Do they trust how it works?
  • Do they feel in control when they use it?

Leaders inside AI acknowledge this.

  • Sam Altman says AGI may soon “join the workforce,” but stresses progress must come by “iteratively putting great tools in the hands of people,” not chasing abstractions. Capability matters only if it compounds human agency.
  • Demis Hassabis calls it a duty of care: with “very powerful technologies” we must add guardrails. The shift will be “scary,” demanding new meta-skills – chiefly, learning how to learn.
  • Sundar Pichai places AI alongside fire and electricity, yet his emphasis is practical: the bigger the promise, the greater the obligation to earn trust in how it is built and used.
  • Geoffrey Hinton warns of a 10–20 percent chance AI could end humanity, demanding public governance. Yann LeCun rejects doom, arguing controllability and competition matter more than fear. Different tones, but shared ground: adoption depends on control, perception, legitimacy.

Developer takeaway: you’re not only shipping models. You’re manufacturing trust. Ignore transparency, consent, or recourse and adoption will stall.

From the consumer’s vantage point: convenience is never neutral

Technology always arrives dressed as convenience. Then it rewires the day. Search did. Smartphones did. ASI will too.

But adoption is a negotiation. People weigh three trades:

  1. Privacy for personalisation
  2. Autonomy for assistance
  3. Time saved for data shared

When the trades feel fair and reversible, usage accelerates. When they feel coerced or confusing, people churn. Which is why clear explanations, visible controls and honest defaults beat clever features every time.

Regulators are pushing in the same direction:

  • EU AI Act: safety and fundamental rights as the foundation for innovation.
  • Von der Leyen: AI requires competition, collaboration and – crucially – public confidence.
  • UK Bletchley Declaration: AI must be human-centric, trustworthy and responsible. The AI Security Institute vows to “minimise surprise” by stress-testing models before society discovers failure modes the hard way.
  • US FTC: there is no AI exemption from existing law. “Using AI tools to trick, mislead, or defraud people is illegal.”
  • UK CMA: warns against concentration risk. Fair access is a precondition for diffusion, which is a precondition for trust.

Consumer takeaway: people will adopt ASI not because it is powerful, but because it is predictably pro-human – explainable, reversible, and fair.

The adoption engine: marketing as catalyst

If growth is driven by behaviour, not technology, then adoption rests on five gears. And each belongs to marketing to steward:

  1. Clarity over capability – Say what it does and what it doesn’t. Trust scales when ambiguity shrinks.
  2. Consent as a feature – Make choices visible, granular and revisitable. Design for opt-in pride, not opt-out fatigue.
  3. Control in the loop – Give people stop buttons and easy rollbacks. Adoption flows from agency.
  4. Competence you can test – Independent validation isn’t compliance theatre – it’s marketing. Proof is the growth lever.
  5. Contribution beyond the product – Share benefits – time saved, creative uplift, lower costs – with users and society. If abundance concentrates only with platform owners, scepticism becomes rational.

This is marketing not as persuasion, but as stewardship.

The hinge of history is a choice

Stuart Russell warns of billions spent on systems that may outrun our control. Hinton raises existential risk. LeCun counters that doom should not monopolise policy. Hassabis urges guardrails. Altman champions deployment that learns through use. Different views, same reality: the hinge of history is a choice – not what machines can do, but what people will accept.

Manifesto callout

Marketers, the question is ours to answer.

  • Will we be stewards of trust – legal, decent, honest, transparent?
  • Or will we be salesmen of harm – flogging adoption as we once flogged cigarettes, fast food and sugary drinks?

The outcomes are too profound for business as usual. History will not judge the machines. It will judge us – the storytellers, the translators, the bridge.

That answer – more than any breakthrough in code – may prove mankind’s last organic footnote.
