Oculus Rift my online experience

Oculus Rift

Mark Zuckerberg made a very interesting statement about the company Facebook has recently acquired for $2 billion.

“They build virtual reality technology, like the Oculus Rift headset. When you put it on, you enter a completely immersive computer-generated environment, like a game or a movie scene or a place far away. The incredible thing about the technology is that you feel like you’re actually present in another place with other people. People who try it say it’s different from anything they’ve ever experienced in their lives.”

The purchase has caused much confusion and a great deal of speculation. For myself and a few others who have been following the development of Oculus for some time, I think this will turn out to be a real game changer in the world of digital. Immersive gaming has long been a goal of game developers. Immersive social and shopping experiences appear to be on the cards for Facebook users. It is rumoured that the team are already adding in gesture controls.

The latest news is that scientists at the Max-Planck-Institut in Germany have created the closest thing we have to a real life holodeck using a wireless Oculus Rift and multiple cameras distributed inside a 32-foot by 32-foot room.

Imaging walking through a lifetime of Facebook memories as they float past you and all around you: sounds, texts and images coming to life. Imaging experiencing an eCommerce site as if you were in a shop? I think Facebook has a vision of the future that is virtual reality so real it is unreal.
